FAQ

We get asked these questions a lot! Have specific questions about your project? Contact us today!

What is a geothermal heating and cooling system?

A geothermal system uses the stable temperature of the earth to heat and cool your home. It consists of an underground ground loop and an indoor geothermal heat pump that work together to provide efficient year-round comfort.

How is geothermal different from a conventional furnace and air conditioner?

A conventional HVAC system burns fuel or relies on outdoor air temperatures to heat and cool your home. Geothermal systems transfer heat to and from the ground, which remains at a relatively stable temperature year-round. This allows geothermal systems to operate more efficiently while providing exceptional comfort.

How does a geothermal ground loop work?

A ground loop is a network of underground piping filled with a water-antifreeze solution. During the winter, the loop absorbs heat from the earth and delivers it to the geothermal heat pump. In the summer, the process reverses, carrying unwanted heat from your home back into the ground.

When is geothermal most economical?

The payback on a geothermal system can range from 5 to 15 years depending on site conditions and home requirements. Homeowners building in new construction custom homes, rural homes, and homes with no access to natural gas see the fastest payback period on their investment.

Is geothermal more efficient than an air-source heat pump?

Yes. Because geothermal systems exchange heat with the earth instead of outdoor air, they operate in much more stable conditions. This typically results in higher efficiencies, lower operating costs, and more consistent performance during extreme weather.

Can geothermal replace my furnace and air conditioner?

Absolutely. A geothermal system provides both heating and cooling, allowing it to replace both your furnace, air conditioner, and in some cases reduce the workload on your water heater as well.

Is geothermal new technology?

No. While geothermal systems have become increasingly popular in recent years, the technology itself has been used for decades. Ground source heat pumps have been installed in homes, schools, government buildings, and commercial facilities since the 1940s and 1950s.

How long does a geothermal system last?

The indoor ground source heat pump typically lasts 20–25 years, while properly installed ground loops can last 50-100 years. This makes geothermal one of the most durable HVAC investments available.

Is my property suitable for geothermal?

Most properties can accommodate a geothermal system. Whether you have a large rural lot, a suburban property, or a smaller urban lot, there is often a ground loop design that can work. A site assessment is the best way to determine your options.

Why do homeowners choose premium geothermal systems?

Not all geothermal systems are created equal. Premium systems offer features such as variable-speed compressors, advanced communicating controls, remote monitoring, quieter operation, and higher efficiencies. These features can improve comfort, reduce operating costs, reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, and maximize the return on your geothermal investment.
